Menu Writing

Foodservice Management

Skill Area: Foodservice Management

 Assignment Title: Menu Development

What I learned: This assignment was helpful in teaching me how to write a production menu in a foodservice kitchen. I had to make the items on the menu seem more appetizing and appealing. I used different words describing the flavor, taste, and texture of foods to make them the most marketable.  There were many different components and stipulations that had to be followed when creating the menu, such as cost, which foods the customers desired, and flavors that complimented each other.

Reflection to assignment: This assignment was very enjoyable to me. I really liked being able to plan out a menu for a restaurant, while  keeping nutrition in mind. I enjoy cooking and meal planning, so I enjoyed providing a variety of foods for people to choose from. I had not realized how difficult the task of making a menu appealing would be, but once I started I found I had to think and research the foods I chose. I had to rearrange them and use the words that described their best qualities to make them more desirable. I realized how much work goes into the menu at every restaurant I eat at, and I hadn’t even realized there were people who did that.

Relevance to the profession:  The skills used in this assignment can be extremely vital for the foodservice profession. It is important to have practiced these skills and be able to use them in the field. After this assignment, I believe I would enjoy creating more in the future. I feel much more skilled in knowing how to present different foods on a menu after completing this assignment.
